The Response of Repetitive Very‐Long‐Period Seismic Signals at Aso Volcano to Periodic Loading

چکیده
Abstract Triggering of volcano seismic activity and eruptions by tides, atmosphere pressure, rainfall, earthquakes have been in constant debate. However, there is limited evidence concerning the triggering very‐long‐period signals (VLPs), which are closely linked to conduit dynamics. Persistent repetitive VLP event beneath Aso volcano, historically termed long‐period tremor (LPT), manifests episodic pressurization depressurization events a crack‐like shallow conduit. Here we show that LPT display no appreciable spectral peaks associated with major diurnal/semidiurnal tidal constituents or barometric pressure. Instead, passing surface waves ∼0.01 m/s from 2011 Tohoku earthquake elevated preferentially increased likelihood events. We suggest hydrothermal reservoir near source behaves like confined (unconfined) aquifer against short‐period (long‐period) stress. A high stress rate ∼10 2 Pa/s sufficient enhance permeability plug/wall promotes

Decrypting geophysical signals at Stromboli Volcano (Italy): Integration of seismic and Ground-Based InSAR displacement data
We present the integration of seismic and Ground-Based Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar system (GBInSAR) displacement data at Stromboli Volcano. Ground deformation in the area of summit vents is positively correlated with both seismic tremor amplitude and cumulative amplitudes of very long period (VLP) signals associated with Strombolian explosions. Changes in VLP amplitudes precede by ...
متن کاملAutomatic Classification of Seismic Signals at Mt. Vesuvius Volcano, Italy, Using Neural Networks
We present a new strategy for reliable automatic classification of local seismic signals and volcano-tectonic earthquakes (VT). The method is based on a supervised neural network in which a new approach for feature extraction from short period seismic signals is applied. To reduce the number of records required for the analysis we set up a specialized neural classifier, able to distinguish two ...
متن کاملUsing Himawari-8, estimation of SO2 cloud altitude at Aso volcano eruption, on October 8, 2016
It is vital to detect volcanic plumes as soon as possible for volcanic hazard mitigation such as aviation safety and the life of residents. Himawari-8, the Japan Meteorological Agency’s (JMA’s) geostationary meteorological satellite, has high spatial resolution and sixteen observation bands including the 8.6 μm band to detect sulfur dioxide (SO2). Therefore, Ash RGB composite images (RED: brigh...
متن کاملRepetitive fracturing during spine extrusion at Unzen volcano, Japan
Rhythmic seismicity associated with spine extrusion is a well-documented phenomenon at a number of dome-forming volcanic systems. At Unzen volcano, Japan, a 4-year dome-forming eruption concluded with the emplacement of a spine from October 1994 to February 1995, offering a valuable opportunity to further investigate seismogenic processes at dome-forming volcanoes. Using continuous data recorde...
متن کاملRelative seismic velocity variations correlate with deformation at Kīlauea volcano
Seismic noise interferometry allows the continuous and real-time measurement of relative seismic velocity through a volcanic edifice. Because seismic velocity is sensitive to the pressurization state of the system, this method is an exciting new monitoring tool at active volcanoes. Despite the potential of this tool, no studies have yet comprehensively compared velocity to other geophysical obs...
